+ Maintenance and repairs

Maintenance is an important part of a safe and trouble free electrical system. You have your car serviced and maintained regularly so why not your electrical system. If you see anything that does not look right, don’t risk it, call Aitken Electrical to come and check it immediately.

+ Smoke alarms

Smoke alarms are life-saving devices. Not only do they detect smoke well before any sleeping occupant would, they provide critical seconds to implement actions to save lives, property and possessions. Smoke alarms are designed to detect fire smoke and emit a loud and distinctive sound to alert occupants of potential danger. However, if they are not working or not installed properly then they could be virtually useless.

Smoke alarms have been mandatory in all dwellings in New South Wales since 1 May 2006, legislation requires all NSW residents must have at least one working smoke alarm installed on each level of their home. This includes owner occupied, rental properties, relocatable homes or any other residential building where people sleep. There can be penalties of up to $550 for those not complying to the code.

+ Safety switches and switch board rewires

Safety switches save lives. A safety switch, also known as a residual current device or RCD, is an electrical device that detects the loss of electrical current that is lost from the system when someone receives an electric shock or there is fault in the system. They swing into action within 30 milliseconds to shut of the power supply.

Safety switches are now compulsory on all new electrical circuits that have power points or lights on them. A safety switch is easily retro fitted to an existing switch board, and is a safety device that no household should be without. If your electrical board does not have any safety switches, then you and your occupants are at risk of electrical shock. Please contact Aitken Electrical for a quote on a new safety switch or complete switch board rewire.

If you are concerned about the state of the electrical throughout your house then you should be, especially if your house is over 15 years old. Just because, as they say “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” this should not apply to your electrical system. The electrical on your house, especially if it is an older house, has probably gone through years of additions and subtractions creating the possibility for many potential problems. Given the addition of years of wear and tear it’s probably time for a good health and safety check of your properties electrical.
